How to Remove Someone from a Slack Group Message

You can't remove someone from a group DM in Slack. There's no remove button, and that includes for admins. Once a group DM exists, its members are fixed.

What you can do depends on what you're after.

Option 1: Start a new group DM without them

This is the fastest fix when you just want to keep talking without one person.

1. Click the New message (compose) button.
2. Add everyone from the old conversation except the person you want to leave out.
3. Send your message. Slack creates a new group DM.

The old group DM doesn't go away. Everyone in it, including the person you left out, can still read its history. If you add exactly the same people as an existing group DM, Slack reopens that conversation instead of making a new one.

Option 2: Convert it to a private channel, then remove them

Use this if you want to keep the history in one place, or the group is growing. Group DMs top out at nine people, so a private channel is where you'd end up anyway.

1. Open the group DM and click the member names in the header.
2. Go to the Settings tab and choose Change to a private channel.
3. Name the channel and confirm.
4. Open the channel's member list, find the person, and remove them.

Things to know before you do this:

• The conversion is permanent. You can't turn it back into a DM.
• Anyone you add to the channel later can read the full history, including everything from the DM.
• Your workspace admins can restrict who is allowed to convert DMs and who can remove people from channels. If you don't see the option, ask an admin.

You can't leave it either

Slack doesn't let you leave or close a group DM. If you don't want to be part of it anymore, the only option is to ignore it and move the conversation somewhere else using one of the options above.

Removing someone from a channel

In a regular channel, open the channel details, go to Members, and choose Remove from channel next to their name. You can also type /remove @name in the channel. Nobody can be removed from the workspace's default channel, such as #general.

Removing someone from the whole workspace

That's a different thing: deactivating their account. Only workspace owners and admins can do it, from the admin member list. It removes the person from every channel and DM at once, so only use it when someone is actually leaving the company or shouldn't have access anymore.
